How to recognise an original VAMA Chesterfield sofa

As a mark of its quality craftsmanship, every Chesterfield sofa bears a 925 sterling silver plaque with our logo and a sequential number that verifies its authenticity. This lets you recognise your original Chesterfield sofa at a glance when it arrives at your home.
See how we make it!
The Chesterfield sofa frame

The frame is the sofa’s internal structure. It needs the finest timber to ensure a long life. We use solid fir and beech throughout, giving the frame both strength and the right degree of flexibility.
Our joiners do not use inferior timber or chipboard. A solid wood frame is the essential foundation on which every VAMA craftsperson builds a properly made Chesterfield sofa.
Seat suspension

The suspension supports the seat cushions. Our standard Chesterfield sofas use high-strength elastic webbing to keep the seat supple and comfortable. We have used this modern webbing for many years, with excellent results for strength and durability.
On request, we also make traditional suspension with double-cone steel springs and jute webbing, all hand-tied as it was by craftspeople in the 19th century. The historic Chesterfields all used spring suspension, as elastic webbing had not yet been developed.
Cushioning

Customers often ask about the difference between foam and polyurethane foam. Here, foam, polyurethane foam and expanded resin all refer to the same material. What matters is the quality of the material used.
We use some of the finest foams available, combining different densities throughout the cushioning. Their ability to retain their shape becomes evident over time, which is why we source them from leading foam manufacturers.
The polyurethane foam used for deep button tufting is denser than the foam in the seat cushions. This gives lasting firmness to the tufted areas and greater comfort to the seat.
Leather

There is no doubt that the choice of leather always requires the utmost care, as the market offers so many different types and qualities.
Whenever we receive an order, we go to our trusted tanneries to select the best leathers suitable for making the Chesterfield sofa. Once selected at the tannery, the hides pass to the cutting bench where they receive further quality control.

Deep button tufting

Deep button tufting takes skill that develops over time, guided by techniques passed down through generations of craftspeople.
Well-executed deep button tufting demands meticulous care. The same applies to the folds on the front of each arm, which must be even and neatly aligned.
Truly expert deep button tufting is hard to find. Arms crafted with the care found on a VAMA Chesterfield are rarer still.
For more information, read our guide to deep button tufting.
Our craftsmen devote the utmost attention to each individual sofa, and once it is finished and ready for shipment, they do a final check so that everything is flawless.
